I take them for granted – God and His Mother – and I could not possible fathom the suffering they have endured for my sake…
The private revelations of the life of the Holy Family as revealed by the Blessed Virgin to the medieval Spanish nun, Blessed Mary of Agreda were published from her writings in “The Mystical City of God”. This nun, whose body has remained incorrupt for hundreds of years, was able to translocate and was instrumental (through her translocation) in the conversion of the Ancient Inca population, as she translocated to them and taught them to pray the rosary years before the missionary priests reached them.
Though the Catholic Church has NOT ratified these revelations this does not mean that these revelations have been rejected by the Church. Instead, the Church teaches that Catholics can choose to believe the information contained in these revelations (or not) as “private revelations” rather than dogma of the Catholic Church.
One part of these revelations related to the perfect humility of the Blessed Virgin. Our Lady reveals that she asked her Child, Christ, if she could share His suffering with Him. And after discussion and consideration, God granted this request. And so – during their life together – God allowed the Blessed Virgin to see His soul and torment even when she was not with Him.
But then, things went further, for the Blessed Virgin really does love God that perfectly. During their discussions, the Blessed Virgin asked to suffer further for souls. And God, agreeing to her request, made a decision to withdraw from her. And so, Christ withdrew from the Blessed Virgin both physically (by spending less time with her) and emotionally (by speaking with her less and becoming more formal and distant in His speech to her). In this way, the Blessed Virgin felt the pain of His absence and God Himself in the Person of Christ, felt the pain of hers.
That is why Christ called her “woman” and not “mother”. That was so that she would suffer to know that the person she loved most in the world was pulling away from her. He also felt that pain because he loved her so much. And I have been reflecting on this, because, just knowing this sacrifice is heartbreaking… The revelation is that all the Saints and Martyrs in the whole world put together could not have suffered as much as Our Lady because of that sacrifice and withdrawal.
Then... God the Father asked Our Lady if she would willingly sacrifice her beloved Son for sinners. And – with perfect humility and trust – she replied with words to the effect of… “Everything I have is from You... Why would You ever ask my permission for anything. I have no rights. You do not owe me anything. Just take whatever You want, and I will suffer without complaint.”
And she did this for love of sinners – just as Christ loves us and was praying SILENTLY for those who tortured and beat Him during His Passion and Death.
And I have been reflecting on this today, because all these things are just so sad to me… For I take them for granted – God and His Mother – and I could not possible fathom the suffering they have endured for my sake…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
