What Things?

“My daughter... why do you not tell Me about everything that concerns you, even the smallest details?” (Saint Faustina).

The Supper at Emmaus (Rembrandt)

I have been thinking about the two disciples of Christ who were travelling to Emmaus after Christ’s death…

“That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognising Him. And He said to them, ‘What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?’ And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, ‘Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?’ And He said to them, ‘What things?’” (Luke 24:13-20).

Those two men loved Christ. They had been His disciples. When they were speaking to Him and telling Him about the Passion and Death of Christ, “they stood still, looking sad”. And that is significant because even twenty centuries after the event, we hear about the sadness that these friends of Christ felt at knowing of His Passion and Death… And what did they do in their sadness? They ran away. They left Jerusalem. They left their mission. And they began to walk towards Emmaus, which was sort of like the Las Vegas of that time – a sort of party town. In other words, in grief – they chose to leave Christ and all He had taught them.

And there was Christ – coming to find them on the road and talking to them. He did not start out with accusations. He did not make assumptions. He did not lay any blame. He did not say, “Where were you when they crucified me?” Or, “Why aren’t you helping my poor poor heartbroken mother?” He did not blame or direct or accuse. He who knows all things and can see inside all souls did not tell anything. Instead, He asked, “And He said to them, ‘What things?’”…

And I have been thinking about that today, because it occurs to me that I seldom speak to my Beloved from my very heart. Christ told Saint Faustina “My daughter... why do you not tell Me about everything that concerns you, even the smallest details? Tell Me about everything, and know that this will give Me great joy... with childlike simplicity talk to Me about everything, for My ears and heart are inclined towards you, and your words are dear to Me. When you reflect upon what I tell you in the depths of your heart, you profit more than if you had read many books.” And I have been thinking about that today, because I can feel Christ – God the Son – inside my soul. And I can feel that He is asking me, “What things?” And I know that He is waiting with infinite patience for me to answer…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
