The Blessed Virgin – the GREATEST SAINT to ever be conceived – had exactly this child-like trust in God.
The great Saints speak of having a child-like trust in God.
And I have been reflecting on that concept and what it actually must look and feel like…
The Blessed Virgin – the GREATEST SAINT to ever be conceived – had exactly this child-like trust in God. She trusted God in everything. She trusted Him when He said she would have a Son without the intercession of a human man. She trusted Him, when she was rushing off to the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant in her old age. She did not stop and question and say, well, if I am going to make such an inconvenient journey right now, could you please give me a bit of proof that what you say is true. No. Instead, she simply got up, packed her things and left – at great inconvenience to herself – based on the words of an angel.
Just think about that. Based on those words, she jumped up and acted. She did not try to tell herself that they were symbolic. She did not try to excuse herself from action. In other words, she did not over think things. Instead, she did not trust herself at all. She trusted only in God.
And that trust continued during her life. She trusted Him when she fled into Egypt to escape Herod on the basis of her husband’s dream. She trusted Him when she returned to Nazareth based on yet another dream. She trusted Him when her Son adopted a nomadic life and stopped working to earn money to provide for her or even His own comfort.
And she trusted Him when her Son was arrested and tried by unjust judges and sentenced to death.
Even then – in that moment – when her only Child’s Human life was going to be ended. And even then – when she did not truly understand the implications of the Resurrection – she stood quietly and trusted in her God. While she watched him die – slowly and painfully and without any respect – she stood in silence and trusted in Him. Never once did she call out to Him or question Him or worry about what was happening. Instead, she trusted Him – completely and entirely…
And it was because of this that the Blessed Virgin was perfectly FREE…
Saint Josemaria wrote in “Furrow” at page 787, “You have never felt so absolutely free as you do now that your freedom is interwoven with love and detachment, with security and insecurity; for you do not trust yourself at all, but trust in God for everything.”
And when I think of the example of TRUST of the Blessed Virgin, and the gift of freedom that God gave her – simply because she chose to be His wife and His mother and the mother of His Holy Church.
And I think about that today, when I lost faith – and trust – in my God…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
