“If God wanted you tomorrow, He would call you tomorrow…”
I read a sentence the other day and it changed my whole mindset. It was a very simple line written by a priest whose name I do not know and which I saw online and the line was simply…
“If God wanted you tomorrow, He would call you tomorrow…”
And I have been thinking about that…
Christ called the apostles and they LEFT everything instantly and followed Him. I mean they left everything. They did not sell their business. They did not say goodbye to their families. They did not part with dear friends. They did not make arrangements to return. They literally LEFT EVERYTHING and followed a poor man out into the world with no plan or understanding of how things were going to turn out…
Just imagine that in today’s terms… That would be like me going out to work tomorrow and meeting a stranger (basically a homeless man), listening to him speak and then saying, “Okay, that’s it, I am leaving the lot behind – money, bank accounts, clothes, shoes, savings, family, friends, connections, power, influence – even the groceries inside my pantry and dinner on the table – to follow Him.”
Now – OF COURSE – Christ was more than a poor man. He is the PERFECT MAN AND PERFECT GOD. But the words of Christ – that calling – is as real today as it was twenty centuries ago when He called to the apostles…
“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.’ And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately H called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed Him.” (Mark 1:14–20).
It was the same with Saint Matthew (Matthew 9:9) and Saint Nathanael (who is also called Bartholomew) (John 1:49)... There was no hesitation – their reaction was immediate!
And I think about that today – because I make so many excuses… I am not clever enough, not brave enough, not capable enough. I have too many activities already, I am too busy with work, I have other responsibilities. And yet – Christ did not chose talented, powerful or well positioned men to follow Him as His disciples. There were no Alexander the Greats or Julius Caesars among His men. They were people like me – just normal people living their lives.
Saints who change the word do not wait. Because they understand… that if God needs you tomorrow, He will call you tomorrow. If He is calling you now: He needs you now!
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
