Taipan

God provides for this snake, and if He provides for a simple snake then He certainly provides for me!

A sick man in bed, a woman praying to the Virgin and Child (Du Moulin)

The Taipan is the most venomous snake in the entire world.

Native to Central Australia, the Taipan is a snake that lives in the most arid desert in our country. This snake – because of the conditions under which it lives – has adapted to have excellent eyesight (which is very uncommon in snakes, which are notorious for having terrible eyesight). This snake can also survive months and months without food. And this snake’s reflexes, which would be fast for any snake, are the fastest in the world. The venom from this snake is strong enough to kill two hundred thousand mice…

Interestingly though, because this snake lives in such remote parts of Australia, the incidence of death caused by this snake are very low and very rare – basically because it would be difficult to stumble across this snake in the wild…

And there it sits inside its enclosure at the Zoo, with its lightish sandy-brown colour and dark black pointed head.

And as I sat looking at this animal the other day, it occurred to me that this snake proves everything there is to prove about God and all His Holy goodness…

You see, though that snake sounds terrifying because it is such an efficient killer and is able to cause such harm with a single drop of its venom, all of those adaptions exist for a reason – and for a very good reason at that…

After all, think about why a snake might need to have such potent venom and why a snake might need to be so good at hiding itself in the sandy desert so that unsuspecting prey can stumble over it and it can take advantage of the situation to strike… And the reason is very simple. That snake lives in such a remote place in the world that if it is unable to kill its prey when it stumbles across it, the snake might die of starvation before the next prey approaches.

And this is significant. This means that the snake needs to be able to kill its prey and kill its prey quickly if it wishes to survive. And this means that God has allowed this snake to adapt that that it can kill its prey. And that is significant. Because what that really means is that God provides for this snake, and if He provides for a simple snake then He certainly provides for me!

And I have been thinking about that today. Because if God provides for this snake – who is as nothing to God – how much more does God provide for me too. In fact, God provides for this snake in such a way that He even ensures that this snake causes the least amount of harm, by ensuring that humans are far away from this snake which means that the snake is unlikely to attack a human and kill it.

And even understanding that today, my heart of glad. For my Lord and Master is a God who provides for me in all my necessities. How blessed am I in that!

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
