Space

“…the LORD drove back the sea with a strong east wind all night long and turned the sea into dry ground.” (Exodus 14:21).

Parting the Red Sea (Sitarchuk)

Recently, there have been so many changes in the world.

If I only stop to consider the changes that the COVID-19 pandemic caused to the entire world, I feel that I am almost living in a fictional story. After all, who would have thought that the world would be plunged into an economic crisis of this magnitude.

And I have been considering my own life and situation. My work has completely changed int eh wake of COVID… There is simply less of it. And I am not complaining, because we are more blessed than I can say and there is enough of everything and we are lacking in nothing, but it is safe to say that things are different now…

And I have been wondering why.

You see, I read the story of Creation in Genesis the other day. And in this story we are told that God separated the waters. And what that implied in Old Testament terms is that there was one body of water, and God created a firmament that separated the waters below from the waters that were held above the earth, and above the firmament, in the heavens…

“And God said, ‘Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.’ So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault ‘sky.’ And there was evening, and there was morning – the second day.” (Genesis 1:6-8).

In other words, it was at this point that God – who is eternal and unending – created SPACE. And why did God create this space? After all, God is unending and eternal and has no need of space, so why make it? Well, the answer is very simple. God made space for me – and for you too. And He created it for love of me (and of you too) for we are mortal and therefore require space to place out mortal bodies into before we can be with God forever in Heaven.

And later – in the book of Exodus, we are told that God again created space, when He parted the Red Sea for the Israelites…

“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD drove back the sea with a strong east wind all night long and turned the sea into dry ground. The waters were split, so that the Israelites entered into the midst of the sea on dry land, with the water as a wall to their right and to their left.” (Exodus 14:21-22).

And He parted the seas again for Joshua and the Israelites…

“And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.” (Joshua 3:13).

And I have been thinking about those times when God created space, because I have suddenly realised that He is doing the same thing here – right here in my own life… He is making space for me so that I can pass through to Paradise. That is all He is doing. And knowing this today, I realise that I have nothing at all to fear…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
