Lucky for me – unlike the Council – God really does know what is best for me. I can faithfully rely on that!
The gutter outside the front of my home has quite a lot of damage. There are some very beautiful trees growing along the footpath, and their roots have disrupted the gutter a little bit and this makes it very difficult for people to park their cars along that side of the footpath. This is because the tree roots have caused the concrete in the gutter to break apart and therefore driving your car tyres over the broken concrete can damage the tyres and also means that the car is not parked evenly on the ground and is at a strange sort of angle as some wheels are flat on the floor and others are on an angle…
When we first moved into our home, I called the council and reported that broken-down gutter, and asked them to log it for repair.
They promised to come out and inspect the gutter and flag it as an issue for repair. I followed up some months later and was told that the council had examined the footpath and gutter and would be adding it to the budget for repair and would get around to repairing it.
That was almost a decade ago. Today the gutter is as bad as ever.
In fact, it is so bad that we have simply stopped bothering to look at it or complain about it and have just adapted to live with it the way that it is…
The other day, the council made the decision to resurface the small roads around our home. This project was a huge project and a massive inconvenience to all the residents in the street. For days at a time, we were told that we were unable to access our homes by car and had to walk home because the streets were too narrow for the trucks to work on one side of the road at a time and so the whole road was impacted by the resurfacing project.
Now, there is almost nothing more satisfying than driving along a freshly resurfaced road. But one thing is for sure… There are also few things more inconvenient than the work being done to resurface a road…
And I have been thinking about that today because resurfacing that road is like God making changes in my life for my own good… you see, there is often great inconvenience, sacrifice and suffering involved in the calling of God. He does not call us to what is easy – He calls us to what is difficult! And I have been thinking about that today. Because just as the process of resurfacing a road is inconvenient, so too is the process of sanctifying myself. But just as the end result of the process is a freshly resurfaced road, which is a satisfying pleasure to drive on, so too is the end result of sanctification Heaven ETERNAL!
And then there is the gutter… Just as the council chose not to touch the gutter and wanted to work on resurfacing the road instead, so too, does God sometimes chose to work in my life in one way when I am really waiting for Him to get involved in another. Lucky for me – unlike the Council – God really does know what is best for me. I can faithfully rely on that!
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
