“I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6).
I have been reflecting on relativity.
Relativity is a theory that – in its essence – rejects truth, by claiming that there is no one truth and instead there are many interpretations of truth.
And this is the predominant theory implemented in the world that we live in today. You see, this is a world where everyone is allowed to believe whatever they wish and nobody is actually allowed to say that their way is the right way or the true way because there is no right way and no right or wrong in a relative world.
In other words, in a relative world everything is built on shifting sand and we hide behind the pretence that we do not wish to cause offence, and therefore will not dare to speak TRUTH because that would be offensive…
In fact, it is not possible today – even in a Catholic school – to teach a child that there is one true right and wrong. Instead, children are taught that there is “dignity” and that the way to respect everyone’s dignity is to acknowledge “their truth”, rather than “THE truth”. And this is dangerous because it is a half-truth, and a half truth is a lie! You see, by speaking about the dignity of the human being, we are acknowledging the truth about our being made int eh image and likeness of God. But… By failing to TEACH A CHILD THE TRUTH, we are failing to save that child’s soul from damnation, which is eternal death. By pretending to respect the dignity of the human soul, we are failing to equip it with the knowledge that will allow it to make informed choices that will draw it closer to God and purer in sanctity…
Now, I am not really criticising schools – they are in fact doing their very best…
But there is a terrible evil in failing to teach a child that there is a BLACK AND WHITE nature to truth. I may believe that the truth for me is that if I jump off a roof I will fly, but the actual truth is that I cannot fly and if I did jump off a roof, I would instead be terribly injured. And it is the same with failing to acknowledge one truth. I may in fact believe that my perception of right and wrong is correct, but that will not save me on the day of judgement when every soul must submit itself to God’s Holy Will…
You see, there is ONE TRUTH. And that ONE TRUTH is GOD HIMSELF. And what relativity suggests is that there is not actually ONE TRUTH, there is instead a perception of truth and that perception varies depending on who is responsible for truth.
And this is confronting to me as a Catholic, because Christ said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6).
And there it is in black and white – with no relative interpretation possible. Christ is the Truth and NO ONE gets to God without God (in Christ).
And today, I do not think it can get any more clear than that!
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
