Reflection

“He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.” (Luke 1:49).

The Coronation of the Virgin (Velázquez)

Saint Josemaría said, “It was the virtue which attracted the gaze of the Most Holy Trinity to His Mother and our Mother: the humility of knowing and being aware of our nothingness... ‘Because He has looked graciously upon the lowliness of His handmaid’ ...I am more convinced every day that authentic humility is the supernatural basis for all virtues! Talk to Our Lady, so that she may train us to walk along that path.”

And I have been reflecting upon the humble nature of the Blessed Virgin.

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich wrote, Many people passed by and looked at her (the Blessed Virgin), not knowing that the Redeemer was so near to them. She was so patient, so humble, so full of hopeful expectation. Ah, she had to wait a long long time… He (Saint Joseph) was in tears (for being unable to find a place for them to stay) and Mary comforted him.”

And I have been reflecting on that private revelation about the Blessed Virgin too.

You see, “Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm, He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree.” (Luke 1:46-56).

She takes every blessing, and every challenge and every compliment and reflects those back to God.

THAT is how much she loves Him… She refuses to fill herself with anything other than God!

She is like an empty container who is COMPLETELY available to God. If instead, she had filled her soul with herself, it would be like filling a bucket with sand. Once the bucket was full of sand there would be no room to pour any gold in. And the Blessed Virgin knows with inspired wisdom that the bucket of her soul must be available to be filled with GOLD and not sand.

And it is for this reason that she keeps her soul empty of all else but God. Because it is only int his way tat she can REFLECT the MAGESTY of God into the world. And it is only in this way that she can COMPLETELY and PERFECTLY fulfil the Holy Will of God…

And I have been reflecting on that today, as I go about my work. Because very often – despite all the blessings in my life – I forget to say, “He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.” (Luke 1:49).

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
