Looking

I have lost what is right in front of my eyes, and that is the Holy Spirit, who is in my Soul, no matter where I am looking…

Holy Spirit (Bartova)

Have you ever tried looking for something and simply struggled to get exactly what you needed to find?  I find the most frustrating thing in the world the act of searching for something and not being able to find it.  It is even more frustrating to me when I look for a thing and it is located in plain sight but it is just so obvious that my eyes dance over it rather than seeing the thing and this results in me simply missing out on the item and wasting a lot of time searching for something that was right in front of my eyes so to speak.

I used to work for distributors of “fast moving consumer goods”, in other words I worked for companies who sold their products to supermarkets and convenience stores.  And during my time in that work I learned all sorts of crazy things.  For example, I learned that it is a hugely competitive market for businesses to gain space on a supermarket shelf.  And when a product is placed in that middle portion at eye level, that product has prime place.  Products placed on the bottom shelves and on the top shelves, could often not be sold at all, as their competitors were more easily visible and would therefore have an advantage with the consumer just through their placement on the shelves…

There is quite a lot of psychology that goes into analysing the behaviours of the consumer so as to best market and package and display products so that human beings will see them easily and purchase them as well.

I remember once listening to the CEO of the large multinational soft drink company where I worked speak to us and he explained it in this way…  A mother goes into a supermarket and spends fifteen minutes comparing the 1.25 litre offerings to determine the cheapest price.  And then, on her way to the checkout, she sees a cold 600ml offering in the open fridge and (without even thinking about it) grabs the drink on her way out (despite the fact that it costs double the price of the 1.25 litre offering) because it is convenient to her an she is suddenly thirsty…

And I have been thinking about that today.  You see, that is how I am with God.  I spend hours upon hours procrastinating in my life, wondering if I should make this choice or that choice and whether I should spend that five minutes in prayer or whether I should just ignore everything and give up and do nothing instead.  And then, in a split second of weakness, I give in to every temptation because I am hungry or tired or cranky or lazy.  And there – like the mother spending ore than double on less than half the drink because of a mere feeling, I am no better than a beast.

And I have been thinking about that today, because it seems that I have lost what is right in front of my eyes, and that is the Holy Spirit, who is in my Soul, no matter where I am looking…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
