You see, TRUTH is like that lighthouse.Nothing will change it.The truth is the truth is the truth.
My father tells a very old joke and it goes like this…
A battleship sees a light in the distance and sends a radio signal saying, “Please divert your course 15 degrees North to avoid collision.” The Battleship receives an immediate reply via radio, which says “Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees South to avoid collision.” The Battleship responds, “I am the Captain of an aircraft carrier. I am accompanies by three destroyers , three cruisers and a few support vessels. I repeat, divert your course.” The response is immediate. “Well, Captain, I am here alone with my dog. I am surprised to see you heading straight towards my lighthouse. Your call…”
Now, it is true that the joke is well-worn, but it is also a very funny reminder about truth. You see, TRUTH is like that lighthouse. Nothing will change it. The truth is the truth is the truth. And it does not matter if everyone believes it, and it does not matter is nobody believes it, what matters is that the truth does not waver or sway – it stands as firm as that lighthouse – despite all attacks against it.
And I have been reflecting on that over the last few days, because that idea of the stability of truth is both frightening and comforting at the same time. And this is because it is frightening to have to speak the words that the crowd does not wish to hear. And this is comforting, because the Holy Spirit infuses us with His Fire when we accept His call to speak…
In a world that believes in relativity – where everyone is encouraged to do whatever they chose so long as it feels good to them – the idea of having to speak ONE truth is frightening. But this is not the only time in history that the Truth has been rejected. The early Christians – the early Church – were persecuted for hundreds of years. For hundreds of years Christians were threatened with death if they did not profane the truth – and for hundreds of years they died… Because they knew that the Truth was like a lighthouse and would stand firm against any ship…
And Christ reminded us about this when He told His disciples, “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” (Luke 8:16-18).
And just as the lamp cannot be hid under a bushel, and the lighthouse stands firm against attack, so too does the Holy Spirit infuse me with courage to speak the truth…
And that courage brings great comfort to my soul…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
