Just Enough

Now we know JUST ENOUGH of right and wrong to be able to make choices without relying ENTIRELY on God.

The Rebuke of Adam and Eve (Domenico Zampieri)

It is said that God loves the virtue of humility.

And I have been reflecting on that today.

You see, the Angel Lucifer – whose name means “light” – rebelled against the Holy Will of God and became Satan because he was NOT humble, but proud instead. He believed that God’s Will would put him down to a level that was beneath him and because of this belief and fear, he was unwilling to listen to God or obey His holy Will.

And this fall of the angels, which took place outside of time and space before the world was made, led to the fall of humanity and thus Original Sin.

Now, Original Sin, which was the sin where Eve and Adam chose to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, despite the specific and deliberate instructions of God, was the result of the Evil One tempting them to give into their pride rather than be humble and accept God’s Will. In other words, the Evil One convinced Adam and Eve that they needed to find all the answers themselves, because God could not be trusted to provide them with the information that they needed as they needed it.

You see, it is no coincidence that we call it “The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil”. Eating of the fruit of that tree ensured that humanity would forever receive more information. And do you know that they say about a bit of extra information? Well, they say, “It is just enough to be dangerous…”

And that is actually what happened. Now we know JUST ENOUGH of right and wrong to be able to make choices without relying ENTIRELY on God. And because we are running around making choices with JUST ENOUGH knowledge, the choices that we are making are wrong. Because we do not have the RIGHT AMOUNT of information – as God does. Instead, we have a little bit and in using that little bit, we are making poor choices…

Saint Teresa of Avila wrote in her text, “Interior Castle” at pages 175-176, “Once, while I was wondering why Our Lord so dearly loves the virtue of humility, the thought suddenly struck me, without previous reflection, that it is because God is the supreme Truth and humility is the truth, for it is the most true that we have nothing good of ourselves but only misery and nothingness: whoever ignores this, lives a life of falsehood. they that realise this fact most deeply are the most pleasing to God, the supreme Truth, for they walk in the truth.”

And I have been reflecting on that today. For it was a lack of humility that destroyed the world. And I feel such sorrow for God, who accepting our lack of humility, came to earth – to suffer and die – to atone for the sin of Pride.

I feel such sorry that my pride caused that…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
