God allowed the perfect balance of gravity to be maintained so that I would be born so that I would experience His perfect love in Heaven.
There is the perfect amount of gravity on Earth for the Earth and the universe to exist.
Sir Isaac Newton, in the seventeenth century, discovered the force of gravity and greatly contributed to knowledge about this natural law.
The legend has it that Sir Isaac Newton was sitting underneath a tree when an apple fell off the tree. Seeing that normal occurrence, Sir Isaac Newton questioned the reason for the falling apple and came to the conclusion that there must be a force that acts on the apple (and all things on the earth) and that such a force was the reason that the apple always fell downwards and NOT upwards.
Over the following centuries, the knowledge about the force of gravity grew until scientists were able to understand how it worked – not only on the Earth on things like falling apples – but also how it worked on the planet and in the universe as a whole.
You see, there is the perfect amount of gravity on Earth and in the universe for Earth to exist.
If there were more gravity – even only a slight amount more of gravity – then the Earth would be crushed and would cease to exist. If there were less gravity – even only a slight amount less of gravity – then the Earth would spin out into pieces and explode into the universe being unable to hold itself together.
And so – with this perfect amount of gravity – the Earth is able to exist inside the universe and the universe itself can exist with its planets and stars and patterns. And I have been thinking about that perfection today.
You see, the Divine Creator is so perfect and so wonderful and so intelligent, that He built His own intelligence even into the design of the very cosmos He created. He created a universe that is so perfectly balanced that even one slight adjustment in one direction or another would shatter all of creation.
And when I have been reflecting on that today, it seems to me that we are blessed by Mercy of which we have no understanding. It means that when we committed Original Sin, God could have chosen to increase (or decrease) gravity by only the slightest amount and not just smite all humanity – but all of His creation. He could have chosen to begin again without ever needing to consult with us. And it would have cost Him nothing at all – after all He is EVER PERFECT. That means that He was perfect before our time, during our time and after it.
And instead of smiting us out forever. He allowed us to continue on. And He did this – not for Himself – He did it for me. He allowed the perfect balance of gravity to be maintained so that I would be born so that I would experience His perfect love in Heaven.
And when I stop to think about the Act of Mercy in allowing all the sin and offence to occur in the world following Original Sin just so that I would be created and born and be with Him forever in Paradise to experience His perfect love my heart breaks at the love of my Master – who allowed Himself to be hurt just so that I could be born…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
