“Borrowing an analogy from biology, we could say that imprinted upon his ‘genome’, the human being bears a profound mark of the Trinity, of God as Love.” (Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI).
Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, addressed Catholics on 7 June 2009, and I have recently read that beautiful address. In that address, the Pope Emeritus wrote about the Holy Trinity and the love of the three Persons of the Most Holy Trinity. He said, “Three Persons who are one God because the Father is love, the Son is love, the Spirit is love. God is wholly and only love, the purest, infinite and eternal love.”
And I have been reflecting on this infinite LOVE of God as I have been thinking about these beautiful words of Pope Emeritus Benedict. You see, of the three theological virtues – Faith, Hope and Love – LOVE (which can also be called CHARITY) is the greatest.
You see, love is an inclusive thing! Venerable Mary Agreda wrote in her book, “Mystical City of God” about Our Lady’s charity was perfect charity as a reflection of the perfect LOVE and charity of God, because Our Blessed Mother’s LOVE makes the object of her love GREATER, just as God’s love, makes the soul greater...
And this love of God is described by Pope Emeritus Benedict in that same address as God’s decision to invite His Church into the Trinitarian relationship with Him… “He does not live in splendid solitude but rather is an inexhaustible source of life that is ceaselessly given and communicated. To a certain extent we can perceive this by observing both the macro-universe: our earth, the planets, the stars, the galaxies; and the micro-universe: cells, atoms, elementary particles. The ‘name’ of the Blessed Trinity is, in a certain sense, imprinted upon all things because all that exists, down to the last particle, is in relation; in this way we catch a glimpse of God as relationship and ultimately, Creator Love.”
And as the world was created to be GOOD this means that “All things derive from love, aspire to love and move impelled by love, though naturally with varying degrees of awareness and freedom.” (Pope Emeritus Benedict).
And this means that the image of the Most Holy Trinity is the most significant proof of the love of God… And this is because – in the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict – “…love alone makes us happy because we live in a relationship, and we live to love and to be loved. Borrowing an analogy from biology, we could say that imprinted upon his ‘genome’, the human being bears a profound mark of the Trinity, of God as Love.”
For even in the very nature of our being, we were made for companionship, for relationship and for love. And Our Blessed Lord – King of the Universe and Creator of all the World – designed us this way, and then CAME TO US ON EARTH, to suffer and die for love of us, just so that he could fill us with His love… And when I think of that fact, I tremble, for how could one such as I ever deserve a God such as that? How could I?
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
