Frustration

The world was built for perfection, and it is only because of sin that it begins to malfunction…

Creator God (John Frady)

The other day I was struggling with the internet and WiFi connection in my home.

Now, these days, going offline is a really disruptive thing.  After all, I access all my work information through the internet, my children access all their school work.  We watch television through the internet.  We make phone calls and chat to family and friends using the internet.  Pretty much every facet of our lives is dictated in some way through the WiFi connection and the internet.  And we are spoiled by the speed of it these days.

When I was much younger and the internet was first being used in schools and homes, we had dial-up internet.  This was incredibly slow.  It would take ten minutes for the internet to “dial up” or connect each time we wished to log in.  There was very little we could actually use the internet for because it was just so slow.  And we spent a lot of our time waiting for the internet to adjust as required so that we could download and upload things.  When the internet was first invented and first used in my home, I remember starting a download before going to bed and sort of praying that nothing would go wrong with it overnight and that it would be okay and fully-downloaded and ready to use the next morning…  And even then, things went wrong and went wrong often…

The other night when the internet ran slowly, I became so frustrated that things were not working as they were supposed to.  After all, I could have had my work done in half the time if only the internet speed had been better.  It was underperforming so badly, in fact, that I asked my husband to contact the service provider and ask them to review the account and make some modifications to it so that it would run a little better.

Finally, after about an hour on the phone, things began to improve, and the internet began running at a speed that was conducive to functionality.  And I have been thinking about that, because it seems that the internet functioning at full speed is like God having created the world to be a perfect place.  And just as things became corrupted in the service provision to slow down the internet to a frustrating speed, so too does sin slow things down to the point of frustrating the good that can be.

And just as I asked my husband to help me to try to reason with the service providers to improve the situation because I was overwhelmed with frustration, so too do I ask others – through the Communion of Saints – to pray for me and for all sinners, to help us…

And I have been thinking about that today.  For it seems to me that with a little bit of re-setting there would be so much less frustration in the world.  For the world was built for perfection, and it is only because of sin that it begins to malfunction…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
