Fitting

have been reflecting on the prayer of my Beloved to His Heavenly Father – God the Father. And, in particular I have been reflecting on the prayer of God the Son to God the Father through God the Holy Spirit as recounted in the Gospel of Saint Luke…

“In that same hour He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, ‘I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will. All things have been delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.’” (Luke 10:21-24).

You see, God’s way is not my way and His means and methods are not my means and methods. When God choses to reveal Himself to a soul, He does not chose the most learned or clever. Often, He has chosen to make revelations to those who are the least academic among His followers.

Think only of the early apostles. They were fishermen for the most part. In Christ’s time, Jewish men who were unable to learn and memorise the Jewish Holy Scriptures, were told to engage in trades as the disciples did. That meant that they were not the most clever boys in their class. They were not the people who knew or could memorise the most work. In fact, they were the people who struggled most at school, and so were assigned jobs instead that would not require them to use their brains, but rather to use their bodies and their physical strength instead.

And yet – God revealed Himself to them… It was Saint Peter who first proclaimed Christ as the Messiah. It was cowardly Saint Peter, after having run away from the servant questioning him about his connections with Christ on the night before Christ died, who led the early Church as the first Pope. It was Saint Peter who calmly and bravely stood speaking to the Sanhedrin, refusing to agree to be silent on the matter of redemption, no matter what threats were made against him.

And that reminds me of Saint Josemaría, who said, “If God fitted into this poor head of mine, my God would be very small.” And he said this because he understood that God is loe and love has infinite capacity and can fit inside the human heart rather than the human head.

And knowing this, I understand with humility, that the Holy Trinity does not expect me to be more than I am. For everything that They could ever want of me, they have provided to me already.

All the words inside my head are not enough to express even a fraction of God. But the love in my heart can be as endless as the ocean. And even then, I do not think that I could come close to showing Him to you… Even then…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
