The less sinful a soul, the more visible God is to that soul.
A solar eclipse is an astrological event where the moon is positioned for a very brief time between the earth and the sun in such a way that the moon partially or entirely obscures the sun. When that happens, the sun is hidden from view.
And I have been thinking about that today.
You see, when the sun is hidden from our view on the earth during a solar eclipse, the light of the sun disappears. And this means that the most notable thing about a solar eclipse is the darkness that we see during the day-time, when it should be light. And that darkness is a mere illusion. You see, though it is dark and the sun is obscured during a solar eclipse, the sun is still there – unchanging. And the light and warmth of the sun remains there – unchanging.
And I have been reflecting on that today because that solar eclipse reminds me of life on earth after the fall of humankind due to Original Sin.
Prior to Original Sin, when Adam and Eve ate from the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, God was clearly visible to humankind. In fact, God wandered among us. He spoke to us, and He interacted with us. In fact, He loved us perfectly and we loved Him back.
And then, Eve ate from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and then she encouraged Adam to eat from the same tree. And, while there was nothing wrong with that tree, God had expressly forbid us humans to consume its fruit. And that meant that the Original Sin was a sin of disobedience and pride. Where humans disobeyed the Will of God because their pride caused them to feel that they were MORE able to decide how to act in their own bests interests, than God was able to act in their best interest.
And when that happened – when we humans disobeyed the Holy Will of God, it was as though the moon moved between the earth and the sun. And though God is unchanging as the sun remains unchanging despite the eclipse, God – like the eclipsed sun – is hidden from our view now by the interference of the moon. And when you stop and think about it, the moon in the eclipse is like sin. You see, it is sin, which caused the fall of humanity and this sin is what is responsible for obscuring our sight of God.
It is not that God is absent, it is that sin is obstructing our view of Him… This is why the less sinful a soul, the more visible God is to that soul. And that is why the Saints can trust so much in God – because their less sinful state means that they are more easily able to see God.
And I have been reflecting on this today. Because God is right there – completely and eternally unchanged and unchanging – waiting for me to see Him, despite the darkness…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
