“Now He is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to Him.’” (Luke 20:40).
I have never really been a scientist.
However, when I was just a schoolgirl, I did enjoy learning about science. One of my most interesting subjects that I ever studied was the science of Chemistry. I enjoyed the concepts behind this science and I was also fascinated by the logical and predictable nature of this science. It seemed to me that when compounds or elements were added together the results were incredibly mathematical and predictable and therefore somewhat soothing for me. And I really enjoyed learning about it.
While I eventually chose not to pursue senior studies in chemistry while I was at school, I always remembered what I had learned and focused on the direction that things took when mixed together in measured ways.
While I was at school, I learned about the British Scientist, Michael Faraday, who was born in the late eighteenth century. Once, a pupil of his dropped a silver cup into a jar of nitric acid. The acid was corrosive and therefore was very effective in dissolving the cup into tiny fragments of silver. Now this was an expected result of the interaction of those two compounds… However, Faraday had a solution. He added salt to the now messy jar and the salt caused the grains of sand in the cup to float to the bottom of the jar and to settle on the bottom of the jar. Once the grains of silver had settled, they could easily be extracted and were used to mould into a new silver cup that was even more beautiful than the old one.
And I have been thinking about that today. You see, this body that we have is like the old silver cup. It must be thrown into a jar of nitric acid so that it can be destroyed. And that is what happens during our life. We go through experiences that challenge us and change us so that we are better able to deal with whatever problems we actually have to deal with in life.
But, just as Michael Faraday added salt to the jar and caused all the silver to settle at the bottom of the jar, so too does God add Grace to our lives. And in this way, we are able to come to a place where we can “settle” for long enough to be re-born.
And then – we can be judged and we can enter into our proper place and in that place we can be re-made, and re-born to eternal life…
Because my God is the God of the Living and not the dead. And I know this, because He told me so…
“There came to Him some Sadducees, those who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked Him a question... Jesus answered them: ‘that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now He is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to Him.’” (Luke 20:27-40).
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
