God allowed the chaos of sin to be manifested by the chaos of the world when the chaos of the water overcame the land itself.
In the Book of Genesis, we are told that when God created the Earth, one of the things that He did was separate the waters to make a space between them for the land.
In the story we are told that there are waters in the sky – above the space that God created – and waters in the sea below it. By making this space, God is able to make some order in the chaos and having that order, God is able to create order in the world. And that order is what God brings to everything…
“And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:6-9).
And the world was GOOD because that is how God created it – with the order that He introduced into the world. But then, things changed and what had been GOOD was destroyed by SIN. And that destruction caused chaos again.
And so, God decided to punish the world. And how did He decide to do that?
He did that by allowing the water above the sky and the water below the sky to merge. And He did this through the great flood that happened at the time of Noah – to wash the sin away…
“Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out… I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it.” (Genesis 6:11-17).
In other words, God allowed the chaos of sin to be manifested by the chaos of the world when the chaos of the water overcame the land itself.
And I have been thinking about that today as I have been thinking about what that means to sin. For it means to cause chaos in a world that my Beloved has made ordered. And when I think about that today, I think it is a terrible shame. Because I can see the word of my Beloved to create order and I think it terrible to mess around with that.
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
