Bones

The Blessed Virgin calls the ambulance for us by speaking to her Son on our behalf…

Blessed Virgin (Chiara de Propis)

The other day I heard a truly terrible story.  My little nieces and nephew were on their school bus on their way home and the bus accidentally collided with a small car.  The driver of that car (there were no other passengers) became trapped in the car and was seriously injured.  Her injuries involved several broken bones – including the bones in both of her thighs.

Both of her legs were broken in the collision and a fire engine was called to the scene to cut her out of the car.

When the accident occurred, the children in the school bus called their mother (who was waiting for them at their bus stop) to explain what had happened and to ask her to come and collect them from the scene of the accident.  My sister of course rushed to the scene, which had been very close to her designated pick-up area in any case and collected the children.  Before she collected the children, she sat with the injured driver and tried to speak to her calmly while waiting for help to arrive.  However, the driver of the vehicle was severely injured and in shock and was unable to be calmed or settled while waiting for help.

I have been thinking about this poor driver, whose life was changed in a moment in an accident, the children, their mother, and the bus driver too because these things remind me of eternal life…

You see, that bus driver causing the accident is like a person committing a sin.  Often – not always, but often – the sin is not intentional, just as a car accident is very often not intentional.  But just as a car accident can accidentally cause a lot of damage, so too can sin.  After all, that bus driver’s instant of distraction led to serious and life-threatening consequences for the driver of the other vehicle.  And that is something to think about.

And when they witnessed the impact of that car accident, the children on the bus called their mother to come and collect them and look after them.  And when they called her my sister rushed straight over and not only tried to console the injured driver, but also care for her children and take them to safety.  And this is like a soul crying out in a sinful world to our Spiritual Mother – the Blessed Virgin.

You see, when we see sin and we call on the Blessed Virgin, she rushes to us.  She calls the ambulance for us by speaking to her Son on our behalf, just as my sister did for the injured driver.  And she speaks to us to calm us and help us to be okay after a terrible thing like a sin.

And when our bones are all broken and we are in pain and suffering so badly because of the sin of the world, the Blessed Virgin stays with us and helps us so that we will not die spiritually or eternally.

And when I think about that today, I have to stop and give thanks.  For the Blessed Virgin sustains me while I wait – trapped in my sin – for her Son to save me…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
