“The Blessed Virgin from the fact that she is the Mother of God has a certain infinite dignity which comes from the infinite good, which is God.” (Saint Josemaría, “Friends of God”, page 275).
In his writing, “The Way” at 507, Saint Josemaría wrote, “The humility of my holy Mother Mary! She is not to be seen amid the palms of Jerusalem, nor at the hour of the great miracles – except at that first one at Cana. But she doesn’t escape from the contempt at Golgotha; there she stands, juxta crucem Jesu, the Mother of Jesus, beside his Cross.”
And I have been reflecting on that reality today. Because the Most Holy Trinity chose Our Blessed Mother, Mary, to be the Mother of God, even at the beginning of time and space. And that is a truly remarkable thing.
You see, the Soul of Our Blessed Mother is in fact such a masterpiece of perfection that her HUMAN soul is greater than all other created souls. The soul of the Blessed Virgin, which is a mere human soul, is a soul that is superior to every other soul in creation – even the souls of the angels.
And this is a huge huge thing. You see, there are different souls. There are pure spiritual souls, like the soul of God and the angels. Then, there human souls, which are spiritual but contained in a physical body. When our physical bodies die, our spiritual souls are separated from them and we go to Heaven (or Hell), and then – as we proclaim in the Creed – our bodies will be resurrected at the end of the world and we shall be in Heaven body and soul with our glorified bodies. There are other types of souls as well. Animal souls – which do not have eternal life and vegetative souls – which are the souls of living plants.
If you consider all those various types of souls in order, it is clear to see that pure spiritual souls are more powerful than those with a body and those spiritual souls with a body are more than animal and vegetable souls. So that really shows that the soul of the Blessed Virgin is such a masterpiece, because it seems to transcend its very nature so that she can be elevated far above all other created beings…
Saint Josemaría explained this in “Friends of God” at page 275 when he said, “The divine Motherhood of Mary is the source of all the perfections and privileges with which she is endowed. Because of it, she was conceived immaculate and is full of grace; because of it, she is ever virgin, she was taken up body and soul to heaven and has been crowned Queen of all creation, above the angels and saints. Greater than she, none but God. ‘The Blessed Virgin from the fact that she is the Mother of God has a certain infinite dignity which comes from the infinite good, which is God.’ There is no danger of exaggerating. We can never hope to fathom this inexpressible mystery; nor will we ever be able to give sufficient thanks to our Mother for bringing us into such intimacy with the Blessed Trinity.”
And when I think about that today, I am amazed, because the Mother of my God is such a perfect soul that God Himself elevated her above all others, simply because she stood BESIDE Him during His earthly life... And that is something unimaginable…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
