“‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.’” (Matthew 13:33).
We often think of the Kingdom of God is at hand and that we will see it and it will be obvious and coming at us in rays of blazing light.
Instead, Christ told a parable about a fig tree…
“And He told them a parable: ‘Look at the fig tree, and all the trees; as soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.’” (Luke 21:29-33).And He told a parable about the grains of wheat scattered and sown throughout the land...
“Then He told them many things in parables, saying: ‘A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.’” (Matthew 13:3-10).
And He told a parable of the yeast that the woman added to her flour to leaven it… “He told them still another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.’” (Matthew 13:33).
And I have been reflecting on these parables and the nature of this Kingdom…
You see, it is actually a kingdom. And that means that it is something that is built and it grows. It needs people to grow it, just as a fig tree needs insects and animals to pollinate it and people to water it and tend to it and pick its fruit. And the seeds rely on the ground and the soil and the nature of the farmer in scattering them. And the dough relies on the yeast and the flour working together with the temperature to leaven it.
And the Kingdom of God relies on me (and it relies on you too) – working slowing under the influences of the Angels and the Saints, to bring others closer to God and to draw others towards Him so that He is able to be crowned the TRUE KING at the end of all time. For the Kingdom of God does not arrive in a blinding rush – it creeps up slowly, over time, built on the souls of sinful people, who are just trying their best, like me…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
