Push

Of myself, I am nothing, but with God all things are possible.

Temptation of Christ (James Janknegt)

It only takes a little bit of a push to get things across the line.

The difference between a great success and a terrible failure is very often just a little push.  This is why performance athletes train longer and harder than people who are not professional athletes.  This is also why people who are considered at the top of their “game” in terms of their performance in any aspect of life are people who tend to push a little bit further and go a little bit longer than other people.

I have often said that the child who achieves the highest grades at school is not the child who is the most clever, but rather, the child who is the most capable of pushing themselves.

And I have been thinking about that.  Because this certainly applies in a spiritual sense as well.  You see, all the great Saints were people who were able to push one little bit more than other people.  And the GRACE was in the push.  The GRACE is always found in the little bits that could otherwise be left aside.

There is GRACE in it when I push myself not to retaliate when my husband says something careless that offends me.  There is GRACE to be found in turning the other cheek.  And that Grace exists because when we do that – when we turn our cheek or force ourselves not to respond or retaliate, that is when we are pushing ourselves beyond what we would normally do.  And in that moment of pushing, in that little incremental strength, we are showing – not our own power – but the power of God.

You see, we are made in the Image and Likeness of God.  And that means that we are able to do things that are SUPERHUMAN.  And we are able to do those things because we are able to rely on the GRACE of God to allow it.  And we can see this through the example of Christ and His Blessed Mother.  You see, when Christ was tempted in the desert, He sent Satan away and instead He relied only on God and God’s Divine Power – refusing to be swayed by the comforts of the world, even where He was in the desert…  And the Blessed Virgin did the same thing when she stood in SILENCE at the foot of the Cross.

You see, there is great strength in being able to push that last little bit to conquer our own weaknesses.  And this strength is not human – but it is superhuman – and all God asks of us to be able to achieve that superhuman strength and push that last little bit, is to place our trust in Him and ask Him for His Grace.  For of myself, I am nothing, but with God all things are possible.

And today, I give thanks to God whose Grace allows me to live eternally…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
