Dual

The very best thing that happened in the history of the world is the DEATH OF THE SON OF MAN.

Nativity (Hanna Varghese)

Today is Christmas Day.  It is perhaps the most wonderful day of the year.  This is the day when God was born so that He could die.

When I was a little girl, I really loved Christmas for the food and the family and the gifts.  It was a big deal in our family at Christmas time when I was a little girl.  We spent months preparing for the big day and weeks recovering from it.

And we did nothing wrong.  Our focus was on the birth of Our Risen Lord, and we spent time at Church and in prayer.  We spent time reflecting on God and the miracle that is Christmas and we spent time together – and perhaps that was the most important part of the season.

Today is Christmas Day and I have replicated so many of the traditions in my own family today.

There is food and family and gifts.  We spend time in prayer and reflection on the birth of Christ.  And there is a general feeling of goodwill among all.

And yet, I cannot help but think of the dual nature of the season.  You see, we celebrate this marvellous season with a focus on the Christ Child…  There were times in her life when Saint Faustina received apparitions of God the Son as the Christ Child.  When she asked Him why He chose to appear to her in that form, He replied that He wished to teach her humility and until she had learned humility, then He would continue to appear to her in that form.

And I have been thinking about this today.  For it seems that there are many ways to look at this miracle of Christmas…

You see, the very worst possible sin ever committed in the history of the world is the MURDER OF THE SON OF MAN.  And that is true and perfectly true and will always be true.  Nothing could ever be a greater sin.  And yet, the very best thing that happened in the history of the world is the DEATH OF THE SON OF MAN, who died for my sake to redeem me…

And I have been thinking about the dual nature of that truth as I have been reflecting on this ONE TRUTH – God turns all things to GOOD.

And as I reflect on that today, I can see the blessings in the DUAL nature of this world.  For with my human eyes, I perceive such a limitation of God’s power, and yet with the spiritual eyes of my soul, I can see the unimaginable GOOD that comes from the works of God.

And today – as I pack away the Christmas wrapping and tidy up the house, it occurs to me that the wonders of the universe were contained inside the tiny little body of that babe – the same body that was murdered thirty-three years later…

And, today, the miracle of that GOODNESS, is overwhelming to me…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
