There is nothing that the Evil One fears worse than the Blessed Virgin, that young, thirteen or fourteen year old girl…

If I ever were to try to face down the Evil One, I would lose.  I would not just lose by a little bit, but I would lose by an awful lot.

You see, I am a mere human – and a very weak and sinful human at that – and the Evil One is an angel, a fallen angel, but an angel, nonetheless.  And that is very powerful.  That means that just as I am able to reason through things in a more rational and controlled manner than a very young baby, so too can the Evil One rationalise things far more effectively than I ever could.

And there is more to it than that.  There is not good and clean and well-meaning intelligence that is designed to help me to get understand the message being communicated, this is malevolence.  This is a very serious threat against me – and not a threat against Earthly life – but against my spiritual life.

The Evil One would literally do anything to ensure that I am damned and not saved…

And I have been thinking – not about the Evil One, against whom I could never ever win – I am thinking about the Blessed Virgin.  That young thirteen or fourteen year old girl who was asked to conceive the Immaculate Conception and become the literal Mother of God, was entrusted to face off against the Evil One.

And let me consider who she was…  Well, the Blessed Virgin was NOT educated.  She did NOT attend university.  She did NOT have a powerful or important job.  She was NOT known for her writing or doctrines.  She did not have a lot of money or power.  She was a Mother and Wife.  She was NOT even a ROMAN wife and mother, she was a Jewish wife and mother.  And that means that in the scheme of things, the Blessed Virgin was one of the least empowered people in her world and at her time.

And God chose this woman and this soul to become the first Tabernacle.  He chose this woman to hold God Himself in Human form.  Firstly, she held Him inside her womb and shared her Body and Blood with Him.  Later she held Him in her arms.  She kissed the Face of God.  She cleaned after Him, she nourished Him from her breasts.

And this young girl – who was completely powerless in her world, was the soul of whom the Evil One feared since the beginning of time.  That apparently harmless woman with no power at all, was so powerful in reality the whole world and the salvation of every soul in it depended on the strength of the Blessed Virgin to WIN…

And she won, not because she was conceived without sin – after all, Eve was also conceived without sin and born into a sinless world and still managed to sin and cause the destruction of humanity – but because she chose to live without sin.

And it occurs to me today, that if only I would also chose to live without sin, then I too might have a chance to stand beneath the mantle of the Blessed Virgin, and allow her to Win against the Evil One for me.

For there is nothing that the Evil One fears worse than the Blessed Virgin, that young, thirteen or fourteen year old girl…
